THE PURPOSE

세계에서 가장 빠른 50mm미만 카본림이 UD Carbon Spoke technology와 결합하여 완변한 올라운드 퍼퍼먼스를 실현하였다. 탁월한 공기역학 성능과 측풍 안전성, 향상된 응답성과 낮은 무게까지 더해졌다.

SLC HUBS

새로 개발되어 적용되고 있는 HUNT Sprint SLC hub는 강성과 파워 전단력의 향상을 가져와 페달링 파워가 전진운동에 보다 사용될 수 있게 해준다. 허브쉘은 냉단조된 7000 series alloy로 제작되어 기존 6000 시리즈보다 무게 대비 향상된 강성을 보유한다. 대구경 15mm diameter hub axle은 스프린트와 클라이밍시 반응성을 향상시켜준다. 원형의 dropout interface는 확실한 장착을 보장해준다.

WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER 

논쟁할 수 없는 공기 역학적 성능으로 rim-brake wheels은 과거 23mm가 주류를 이루었던 시기를 지나 현재는 27-28mm 광폭으로 이전해가고 있다. 하지만 rim brake calipers로 인한 공기 역학 성능 제한과 아직도 23mm 타이어 장착을 기본으로 rim-brake wheels이 출시되는 상황이다. 그러나, 이미 프로 선수들을 포함하여 일반 라이더들도 25mm, 28mm 또는 심지어 30mm 타이어를 적극적으로 선택하는 움직임이 더욱 두드러지고 있다. 광폭 타이어 장착으로 인하여 얻는 향상되는 그립감, 승차감, 그리고 공기역학적 성능이 더 많은 라이더들의 선택을 유인할 것이라고 판단하여 Hunt는 road disc aero wheels은 광폭 타이어 장착을 염두해두고 디자인되는 것이 당연하다고 판단하였다. 

INDUSTRY-LEADING AERO KNOWLEDGE

2017년 HUNT에 합류한 Luisa Grappone (MSc Aerospace Engineering)은 wind tunnel 테스트와 aerodynamic wheels 개발을 10년 간 해온 경험을 바탕으로 (with World Tour pros from BMC Racing, Team Movistar & Cervelo Test Team) 새로운 HUNT의 세계적인 수준의 공기역학 성능을 지닌 신규 디스크 휠셋 개발을 Peter (Co-Founder & Materials Scientist)와 Tom (Co-Founder & Product Manager) and 다른 팀원들과 함께 주도하고 있다. 

HOW WIDE?

몇몇 리딩하는 휠 제조사와 자전거 회사들은 타이어보다 넓은 림의 장점에 대해 (심지어 28C 타이어보다도) 알고 있고 따라서 가장 효과적인 휠과 타이어 모두를 감안하여 aerofoil shape을 디자인하고 스포크 베드로의 공기흐름에서 발생하는 난기류를 줄이고자 하고 있다. 지금 분명한 것은 disc-brake road rims 또한 최상의 공기역학 성능을 얻기위해 충분히 더 넓어져야한다는 사실이다. HUNT는 이러한 새로운 자전거 휠셋의 변화 속에서 disc brake road wheels은 매우 큰 기회를 제공하고 있다는 점을 인식하고 30mm+ 초광폭 휠셋 개발을 다른 회사에서 개발한다는 소식이 알려지기 1년 전인 2017년 가을부터 초광폭 휠셋 개발에 착수하였다. 공기역학 전문 엔지니어인 Luisa는 여러 개의 3D-printed prototypes을 만들어 유럽의 유명 윈드 터널과 밀접하게 같이 테스트를 진행하였다. 18개월간의 고통스러운 연구와 디자인과 수차례의 윈드 터널 방문으로 드디어 34.5mm wide shape를 가진 48 Limitless Aero Disc Wheelset이 탄생하게 된다.

FEATURES

PATENTED LIMITLESS TECHNOLOGY - 가장 공기역학적으로 우수하고 안정적인 rim shape을 만들기 위해서 rim bed는 22.5mm의 내부 폭을 가질 필요가 있다. 이러한 내부 폭이 만들어내는 tire profile에서 가장 이상적인 형상의 rim의 외부 폭은 35mm이다. 이러한 초광폭의 도입으로 인한 무게 증가를 극복하기 위해서 저밀도의 polymer insert를 카본 pre-preg과정에서 만들어낸 공간에 삽입한 후 curing process에서 카본과 완전히 하나로 붙게하여 굉장히 강한 결합이 되게 한다. carbon의 밀도는 1.6g per cubic centimetre인데 반해 polymer insert는 단지 0.7g per cubic centimetre 밖에 안나가기에 하나의 림에서 50g의 감량을 실현할 수 있었다.

FREEHUB BODY - 3개의 pawls은 각각 3 teeth를 가지며 48t ratchet과 체결되는데 인상적으로 낮은 7.5도의 체결 각도로 즉각적인 체결이 가능하다. Steel Spline Insert가 삽입되어 cassette sprocket damage로부터 보호해주도록 내구성을 강화하였다. 각 Freehub Body에는 2개의 CeramicSpeed bearings이 들어있다.

UD Carbon Spokes - TaperLock UD carbon spoke는 스틸 스포크대비 30% 이상의 측면 반응성이 향상되며 한 개의 스포크 중량이 2.7g에 불가하고 스포크당 장력은 최대 450kgf를 감당할 수 있다. TaperLock technology덕분에 림베드안으로부터 스포크 키를 이용하여 스포크 조정이 가능하다.

SLC HUBS

HUNT Sprint SLC hubs add strength and enhance power transfer, meaning more of your power pushing you forwards. The hub shell is a cold-forged 7000 series alloy, offering a greater strength-to-weight ratio than extruded 6000 series alloys. Large 15mm diameter hub axles for sprinting and climbing responsiveness. Circular dropout interface steps ensure a secure fitment.

WIDER TIRES & WIDER WHEELS | RIDE FASTER 

Leading rim-brake wheels have been at the 27-28mm wide mark for some time, with undisputed aero benefits over narrower designs. However, they are aerodynamically limited by rim brake calipers limiting the maximum width of the brake track. Further, most are optimised for narrower tires. 23mm tires used to be the standard… but for us, you and most pro riders, 25/28 and even 30mm tires are the preferred choice. Let’s face it: when leaning in on the final turn of a mass bunch sprint or descending sweeping alpine bends, you want serious grip! Plus, the lower rolling resistance benefits of 25 and 28mm tires* mean that road disc aero wheels should be specifically designed around these wider tires. Accordingly, this wheelset has been designed using schematics and feedback from Schwalbe's own engineers. (*Especially rider-system benefits, wheel & tire only tests do not include rider damped losses, and how lower pressures reduce these losses by reducing rider movement. This is a whole other area we will be releasing scientific data on.)

We were ecstatic when Luisa Grappone (MSc Aerospace Engineering) approached us in 2017 about joining HUNT. Luisa’s experience in wind tunnel testing and developing wheels for 10 years (with World Tour pros from BMC Racing, Team Movistar & Cervelo Test Team) showed her industry-leading experience. So of course we welcomed Luisa to join us as HUNT Product Engineering Manager in August 2017. Using Luisa as our Engineering lead, Peter (Co-Founder & Materials Scientist), Tom (Co-Founder & Product Manager) and the whole team here set to work immediately to develop you the fastest ‘unlimited’ road disc-brake wheelset in the world!

HOW WIDE?

34.5mm! In the last 9 months, road aero disc-brake rim widths have been creeping out to 30-32mm, with several leading wheel and bike companies realizing the benefits of having a rim wider than the tire (even a 28mm tire). This creates the most effective overall aerofoil shape (when considering the wheel and tire together) and reduces turbulence as airflow transitions into the spoke bed. It is now obvious that disc-brake road rims need to be significantly wider to be at their best aerodynamically. With our experience at HUNT, we knew disc brakes provided us a huge opportunity to smash open this area of wheel development. In autumn 2017, a full year before anyone knew about any other wheel companies’ 30mm+ development, we set about unleashing wheel widths, and Luisa designed several 3D-printed prototypes for wind tunnel testing. Luisa worked closely with Europe’s leading bicycle wind tunnel, and over 18 months of painstaking research, design and multiple wind tunnel visits, developed the 34.5mm wide shape for the new 48 Limitless Aero Disc.

WIDE RIM = WEIGHT OR TIRE PROBLEM?

The aero benefits of going wide, can come with downsides, as usually a compromise choice has to be made: - Go for a wider internal rim of 24 or 25mm = LOSE TIRE COMPATABILITY with 23/25mm tires from leading brands. - Choose to add extra carbon material to thicken the sidewalls, in order to maintain the wide aero shape = HEAVY RIM WEIGHT

THE SOLUTION | HUNT LIMITLESS TECHNOLOGY (PENDING PATENT)

The HUNT 48 Limitless Aero Disc rim has as much carbon-fibre material and mass as any other comparable road disc wheelset, and far surpasses ISO impact testing. Added to the sidewall area is an extra-strengthening co-molded low density polymer (density only 0.7g/cm3 vs carbon fibre prepreg of 1.6g/cm3) that keeps the weight low whilst allowing the extra width. LIMITLESS is a pending patent owned by HUNT and developed by Luisa, Tom and Pete, and is exclusive to HUNT wheels. So, you can have a wheelset with the world’s fastest aero shape but also impressively low weight.

The wind tunnel data we recorded is shown against the full range of incumbent world-class aero wheels in the charts below. The results speak for themselves. It was amazing to see Luisa’s face when it became evident what we'd achieved for riders. It’s been hard work but it’s been very worthwhile. This process and the knowledge gained from pushing the boundaries of aero wheel development creates huge opportunities to serve you with a wide range of world leading aerodynamic wheels…this is just the beginning! 

FEATURES

PATENTED LIMITLESS TECHNOLOGY - In order to create the most aerodynamic & stable shape for the tire, a rim bed of 22.5mm is needed. With the tire profile this creates, the ideal shape of the rim curves out to an external width of 35mm. To overcome the weight penalty associated with this, we use a (non-structural) low density expanding polymer insert, inside a channel carved out during pre-preg. This is bonded to the carbon during the curing process, resulting in an exceptionally strong bond. The density of carbon is 1.6g per cubic centimetre, whereas the polymer insert weighs just 0.7g per cubic centimetre, resulting in a (rotational) mass loss of just over 50g per rim. This patented technology enables us to consider the limits of material properties, and smash right past them.

RIM PROFILE - Patented LIMITLESS technology allows for a 22.5mm rim bed and a huge 34.5mm external rim width, meaning the rim sits far wider than the tire for aerodynamic superiority.

CERAMICSPEED BEARINGS - The 48 Limitless Aero Disc will come fully equipped with CeramicSpeed's industry-leading hybrid ceramic bearings, even in the freehub body. All CeramicSpeed Balls are of the highest quality Grade 3 Silicon Nitride, featuring the highest achievable surface finish and roundness. The quality of the balls is what determines the performance and lifetime of a bearing. The CeramicSpeed Balls feature unparalleled impact strength, smoothness, roundness and brittleness.

FREEHUB BODY - Featuring 3 multi-point pawls with 3 teeth each and a 48t ratchet ring. The result an impressively low 7.5 deg engagement angle. Durability is a theme for HUNT, and so all our freehub bodies have Steel Spline Insert re-enforcements to provide excellent durability against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies. Includes 2 CeramicSpeed bearings in the body.

UD CARBON SPOKES - TaperLock UD carbon spokes offer up to a 30% increase in lateral responsiveness compared to steel equivalents. Only 2.7g per spoke and yet can handle tightening forces of ~450kgf per spoke. Owing to the TaperLock technology, these spokes can be trued using a spoke key from inside the rim bed.

WIND TUNNEL TESTED - Developed by Luisa Grappone, with years in the wind tunnel spent testing every last detail. We've left no stone unturned in designing this wheelset from the ground up to be very fastest in the world within its class.

REAL WORLD TESTED - The fastest wheels ever down the Trouée d'Arenberg, the most hallowed (and, alongside Mons-en-Pévéle & Carrefour de l'Arbre, the hardest) of the cobbled sectors used in the Paris Roubaix. Nothing tests the limits of a wheelset like pavé.
