THE PURPOSE

130kg 몸무게까지 사용 가능한 로드 휠셋으로 2016년 3월부터 Hunt OpenDev team member이자 은퇴한 Leicester Tigers rugby player였던 Will Johnson에게 영감과 도움을 받아 개발되었다. 속도와 강성을 모두 감안하여 개발되었으며 Will과 125킬로의 몸무게를 가진 그의 프로 럭비 선수 친구는 2016년 1월 Hunt 4Season Dura wheels (권장 최대 몸무게: 110kg)을 구매하여 Paris-Roubaix Sportive에서 사용하여 성공적으로 경기를 마쳤지만 보다 성능중심적이고 감량이 된 휠셋을 원하여 새로운 Race Aero SuperDura wheels을 개발하게 되었다. 보다 깊고 넓은 림에 블레이드 에어로 스포크로 공기저항에 유리하도록 하였고 고사양의 부품을 사양하여 1,600그램 이하를 실현하면서도 여전히 많은 수 (전륜 28 / 후륜 32)의 스포크를 채용하였고 강성이 매우 높은 림 소재를 적용하여 힘이 강하고 몸무게가 많은 라이더들을 충분히 감당할 수 있도록 디자인되었다.

CHARACTERISTICS

RIMS: 외부 림폭 24mm와 림 높이 31mm가 적용된 둥근 형상을 가진 Niobium 성분이 다량 함유된 합금 소재로 Niobium 합금은 특허 소재이며 보다 진보된 T10 열처리 과정을 통해 탁월한 무게, 강성, 내구성을 확보할 수 있어 25C나 28C같은 광폭 타이어 장착이 가능하고 31mm 림높이로 에어로 성능을 향상시켰으며 경량화를 통해서 탁월한 등판능력과 가속력을 확보하였다. Hunt Race Aero Wide Wheel들중에서 가장 강한 림 소재를 사용하였고 외부 림폭 24mm, 내부 림폭 19mm 그리고 림 높이 31mm을 적용하여 보다 향상된 그립력, 승차감, 에어로 성능, 구름저항을 실현하였고 또한 림폭을 증가시킴으로써 타이어의 공기 주입량이 증가하게 되어 노면 충격 흡수력이 향상되어 승차감과 더 높은 무게를 감당할 수 있게 되었다. 

HUBS: 더 큰 구경을 적용하여 전륜에는 12mm 후륜에는 15mm QR 엑슬과 보다 강한 7075-T6 열처리 알루미늄을 바디에 사용하여 보다 많은 체중을 견딜 수 있도록 하였다. 이렇게 냉각 단조된 후 CNC 가공된 hub shell은 금속 조직 구조가 강한 스포크 압력을 감당할 수 있도록 이상적으로 배열되었고 추가적인 강도 또한 단조 과정을 통해 더해졌다. 

FREEHUB BODY: 각각 3개의 teeth를 가진 3개의 pawl과 48 tooth 라쳇 링이 결합되어 7.5도라는 인상적으로 낮은 결착 각도로 즉각적인 결착 속도를 보이며 강한 무게에도 탁월한 내마모성을 가진다. Steel Spline Insert가 허브바디에 보강되어 일반적인 프리허브 바디에서 발견되는 카세트로 인한 손상을 막아준다.  

BEARINGS: 휠셋의 심장인 베어링은 아무리 투자를 해도 가치가 있는 부품으로 그런 이유로 이 휠셋에서는 TPI 베어링을 선택하였다. TPI 베어링은 많은 자전거와 자동차 회사들로부터 신뢰를 받는 고급 정밀 카트리지 베어링으로 이 휠에서는 보다 업그레이드된 LU/LB seals을 적용하여 베어링과의 내부면의 마찰을 줄이고 구름저항도 줄여 속도를 증가시켰으며 동시에 외부 실링면은 double contact sealing을 적용하였다.

HUB SHIELD: 모든 4개의 허브 캡과 프리 허브바디에 추가적인 seals과 shielding이 적용되었으며 hub shell은 허브 캡과 겹치도록 디자인되어 외부로의 수분 유입을 추가적으로 차단하도록 되어 있다. 이로 인하여 많은 장거리 라이딩에서도 문제가 발생할 소지를 최소화하였다. 

RIM BED: H-Lock is our tubeless-ready rim bed profile with up-kicks to the shoulders of the tubeless steps which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tires. The H-Lock profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running lower pressures or riding off-road.

SPOKES: 최고급의 Pillar Spoke Re-enforcement PSR XTRA models을 전륜에는 28개 후륜에는 32개를 적용하여 각 스포크에 가해지는 부하를 줄여주면서 하중이 최대하 많은 스포크에 배분되도록 하였다. 이 butted blade aero spokes는 더 가벼우면서도 더 높은 탄성을 제공하여 보다 긴 시간동안 피로도에 대한 저항성을 가진다. PSR spokes는 스트레스가 집중적으로 가해지는 헤드 부분을 2.2mm 넓이로 소재를 보강하여 강성을 높였다. 

WHEEL BUILD: 휠의 부품들을 잘 조립하는 것이 매우 중요하기에 모든 Hunt 휠셋은 수작업으로 조립된다. 조립 장력은 정밀하게 측정되며 방사형의 프론트 휠은 스티어링과 무게 하중을 핸들링하고 3 cross 형태의 후륜은 드라이브 토크를 림에 전달한다. 스포크 헤드를 지지하는 허브 가장자리의 소재를 강화하여 보다 장시간의 높은 하중에 따른 피로도를 견딜 수 있도록 하였다. 

SKEWERS: Hunt Race Aero SuperDura quick-release skewers는 캠부분에 자체 윤활기능이 있는 브라스(brass) 소재를 적용하였고 stainless steel spring으로 업그레이드를 하였다. 이 quick-releases는 1,000kg의 브레이킹 압력을 견딜 수 있도록 디자인되고 실험되었다. 

NIPPLES: 무게 중요한 고기능성 휠셋을 만들기 위해서 경량의 합금 니플은 바람직한 선택이다. 이 휠에는 보다 긴 14mm 니플을 적용하여 보다 강하고 스포크와 보다 긴 나사선 접점을 가진다. 육각의 헤드와 사각의 몸체로 구성되어 보다 쉽게 텐션 조정과 유지보수가 가능하다.

THE PURPOSE

The race wheelset for riders up to 130kg, inspired by and developed alongside Hunt OpenDev team member (and ex-pro Leicester Tigers rugby player) Will Johnson. Speed and strength in equal measure. Will has been a member of our Hunt OpenDev team since we launched it in March 2016. Will and a friend, also a professional rugby player (who weighed 125kg), both bought 4Season Dura wheels (suggested max rider weight 110kg) from us in January 2016 as winter wheelsets. Then they both rode the Paris-Roubaix Sportive on them, that was a nervous day for us here! The two of them successfully completed Roubaix on the 4Season Dura wheels but fancied something with more of a performance focus and some weight-saving over the low profile/round-spoked/brass-nippled 4Season Duras. So with Will's input we designed the new Race Aero SuperDura wheels. They feature a deep and wide rim combined with bladed aero spokes for extra wind-cheating advantage. The high-spec components build into a sub-1600g wheelset, and yet high (28/32) spoke count and seriously strong rim material result in wheelset that can truly handle the power of larger riders

CHARACTERISTICS

RIMS: The Race Aero SuperDura has a 24mm wide and 31mm deep rounded profile rim from Niobium enriched alloy. Niobium alloy is a proprietary material and uses an advanced T10 heat-treatment process. The process delivers outstanding weight, stiffness and durability meaning rims can be wider for 25 and 28mm tyres, deeper for better aero performance, light for excellent climbing and acceleration and capably handle the increased loads and torque that more powerful riders can dish out. The wheelset utilises our strongest rim material in the tried and tested profile from our Race Aero Wide wheels. We've added even more width (24mm external and 19 internal) and depth (31mm) for extra grip, comfort, low aero drag and low rolling resistance advantage. It's also important to note that widening the rim increases the air volume for any given tyre size thus creating better shock absorption which is especially useful for higher loading/more powerful riders.

HUBS: The hubs on the Race Aero SuperDura benefit from larger 12mm front and 15mm rear axles. This combined with them being machined from hard and strong 7075-T6 heat treated alloy means that they easily withstand the higher loads created by larger riders. Plus the cold forged then CNC machined hub shell means the metal grain structure is ideally aligned to handle the high spoke loads, the work hardening from the cold forging also adds extra strength.

FREEHUB BODY: Featuring a 3 multi-point pawls with 3 teeth each and a 48 tooth ratchet ring results in an impressively low 7.5 degree engagement angle and excellent resistance to wear under heavy loads. The Sprint freehub has strong individual pawl springs which engage quicker. There is also a Steel Spline Insert re-enforcement to provide excellent durability against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies.

BEARINGS: The heart of any wheel. Investing in them makes huge sense which is why we chose TPI. Their high-grade precision sealed cartridge bearings are trusted by many of the world's leading engineering, cycling and automotive companies. The bearings we specced in the SuperDura wheels are upgraded to LU/LB seals which are low-friction sealed on the internal bearing face, to reduce rolling resistance and increase your speed, whilst providing maximum double contact sealing on the exposed faces.

HUB SHIELD: Extra seals and shielding built-into all four hub caps and the freehub body. As you can see from the image in the gallery each hub cap, and the freehub body, have o-ring seals (the freehub cap has a lip seal). It is also important that the hub shell is designed to overlap the hub caps providing extra shielding from water ingress. Your Hunt Race Aero SuperDura wheels will provide many miles of fast hassle-free year round riding.

SPOKES: 28 front and 32 at the rear, vastly reduces the fatigue on each spoke, and each spoke hole at the hub and rim, as the rider load is spread over many more spokes. We chose the top-of-the-range Pillar Spoke Re-enforcement PSR XTRA models. These butted blade aero spokes are lighter but also provide a greater degree of elasticity to maintain tensions longer and add fatigue resistance. PSR spokes feature the 2.2 width at the head providing more material in this high stress area.

WHEEL BUILD: Combining these components well is key and all Hunt wheels are hand-built. Build tensions are measured precisely and the radial front wheel handles steering and weight loading forces while the 3 cross rear creates a wheel that delivers drive torque effectively to the rim whilst also increasing the amount of hub-flange material supporting the head of each spoke which makes them even more resistant to long term high load fatigue.

SKEWERS: The little details matter, the Hunt Race Aero SuperDura quick-release skewers use brass for the cam which has self lubricating properties and we have even have upgraded to stainless steel springs so they don‚t rust. The quick-releases are designed and tested to exceed 1000kg of tensile breaking force.

NIPPLES: Lightweight alloy nipples are the right decision to make for a high-performance wheelset where weight matters, plus we use longer 14mm nipples to provide great strength and a long thread connection with the spokes. The nipples also feature square bodies with a hex head (hex spoke key provided with the wheels) to allow ease of tensioning and maintenance.
