새롭게 출시한 Legend Pro4 Wave Disc Wheelset은 휠셋에 향상된 안정성과 스피드를 제공하기위해 상이하게 흔들리는 현상(differential rocking)을 막아주는 에어호일(airfoil: 공기흐름을 보여주는 연막) 덕분에 공기역학을 최적화하는 윈드터널에서 개발된 형상을 가진 휠셋이다. 65/68mm 상이한 림높이의 파도모양의 림 형상은 공기역학과 측풍안정성에서 제공할 수 있는 가장 효율적인 형상이다. 최고수준의 성능을 발휘하도록 해주는 탁월한 휠셋이라고 할 수 있다. 

ABOUT THE WAVE WHEEL REVOLUTION

자전거 산업에서 “Wave” wheels의 등장은 생체모방기술(biomimetics)과 공기역학 기술(aerodynamic engineering)이 결합된 기술적인 진보라고 할 수 있다. Wave wheel design은 humpback whale의 앞 지느러미(flippers)와 작은 혹들(tubercles)에서 영감을 받은 것으로 고래의 앞 지느러미와 작은 혹들은 드래그(drag)을 줄여주고 상승(lift)을 증대시켜준다. 이러한 생체모방기술(biomimetics)은 자전거 산업에 들어오기 전에 항공산업(aeronautics)같은 영역에 영향을 주었는데 이러한 진보들을 지렛대로 삼아 현격한 드래그 감소(drag reduction), 향상된 안전성(improved stability), 그리고 향상된 연료효율성(increased fuel efficiency)를 가져왔다. 특히 전통적인 디자인들과 대비하여 측풍(crosswind)과 고속 상황(high speed conditions)에서 뚜렷한 개선을 나타내준다. 

구체적인 사례로 Pinarello Bolide F HR 3D bike를 들 수 있는데 (https://www.bikeradar.com/features/pro-bike/filippo-ganna-pinarello-hour-record-bike) University of Adelaide에서 실행된 humpback whales의 빈틈없는 수중 움직임(tight maneuvers)과 인상적인 점프능력(impressive leaps)에 대한 연구논문에서 영감을 받아 디자인된 자전거이다. 대학 연구자들이 발견한 것은 지느러미위에 작은 혹들이 민첩성(agility)에 주요한 역할을 한다는 것이였다. 이렇게 해서 University of Adelaide에서 개발한 AeroNodes technology는 처음에는 2006년부터 비행기 날개와 지느러미들에 적용되기 시작했으며 자전거 프레임에 이 기술이 적용된 것은 시트튜브 주변에서 공기가 나뉘면서 드래그를 증가시키는 문제를 관해결할 필요가 있어서였다. 자전거 프레임의 전면부에 미세한 돌기들(precision bumps)을 적용하는 방식으로 AeroNodes technology를 적용되어 시트튜브 주변에서 규칙적인 소용돌이를 만들어줌으로써 문제를 해결하려고 하였다. 이러한 기술적인 특성들은 카본 몰딩(carbon fiber molding)과 같은 표준적인 제조기술로는 쉽게 제작할 수 없기에 Pinarello와 British partner Metron Additive Engineering은 3D printing technology와 새로운 높은 강도의 합금을 사용하여 AeroNodes의 최적의 형상을 만들어내었다. 자연과 스포츠의 결합은 인간의 능력과 스포츠 장비의 개선에 심도있는 영향력을 미친다는 것을 보여준다. (The source of the observation of humpback whale flippers and their tubercles: https://asknature.org/strategy/flippers-provide-lift-reduce-drag/)

TWO TYPES SPOKES: 가능한 최대한 휠의 견고성을 최적화하기 위해서 Legend의 최상위 라인업인 PRO range wheels은 같은 휠에 두 가지 종류의 스포크를 사용한다. 카세트가 장착되는 드라이브 사이드는 DT Swiss Aero Comp® spoke를 사용하여 극강의 측면강성을 확보하여 강직성을 가지게 했고 반대편은 보다 경량인 DT Swiss Aerolite® spoke를 사용하여 휠의 무게가 최적화되도록 감안하였다.

DT SWISS PRO LOCK INTERNAL NUTS: 림 내부에 숨겨지는 DT Pro Lock internal nut을 적용하여 보다경량의 공기역학 휠셋으로 개발하고자 하였다. 림내부 원형의 지지부분은 (spherical bearing area) 스포크가 정확한 방향으로 장착될 수 있도록 보장해준다.

ABOUT THE WAVE WHEEL REVOLUTION

The emergence of “Wave” wheels in cycling represents a technological leap, combining biomimetics and aerodynamic engineering. The design of the Wave wheels was inspired by the observation of humpback whale flippers and their tubercles, which reduce drag and increase lift. This biomimetics influenced sectors such as aeronautics before penetrating the world of cycling. Wave wheels leverage these advances to deliver significant drag reduction, improved stability, and increased fuel efficiency. They represent a notable improvement over traditional designs, especially in crosswind and high speed conditions. 

The Pinarello Bolide F HR 3D bike, with its design inspired by research on humpback whales, is a perfect example. Researchers have been inspired by humpback whales, as evidenced by University of Adelaide studies into these marine mammals' ability to perform tight maneuvers and impressive leaps. They discovered that the tubercles on their fins play a key role in this agility. AeroNodes technology, developed by the University of Adelaide, was initially applied to improve the performance of aircraft wings and fans as early as 2006. The application of this technology to bicycle frames was driven by the need to manage alternating airflow around the seat tube, which causes flow separation and increased drag. AeroNodes, precision bumps on the front surface of the frame, minimize this separation effect and significantly reduce drag by generating a regular pattern of swirls around the seat tube. These technical features could not be easily produced by standard manufacturing techniques like carbon fiber molding. So, Pinarello and its British partner Metron Additive Engineering used 3D printing technology and a new high-strength alloy to produce these optimized shapes of AeroNodes. This integration of science into sport illustrates the profound impact of interdisciplinary research on improving human performance and sports equipment. OBSSESSION TO MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE: Our obsession is therefore not a simple weight, but a perfect harmony between the latter, and the rigidity, the performance of the components and their qualities. We then challenged our certainties to consolidate one, our wheels will not betray your effort, they will optimize it. We have equipped our new PRO III disc rims with an external width of 28mm. These new wheels thus benefit from optimized aerodynamic drag, as well as increased lateral stiffness. Also, the large width of these rims allows optimal absorption of vibrations, guaranteeing real comfort, essential for performing at the toughest of efforts.

TWO TYPES SPOKES: In order to optimize the rigidity of the wheel as much as possible, the PRO range uses two types of spokes on the same wheel. Where the constraints are the strongest, that is to say on the side of the cassette, we use a DT Swiss Aero Comp® spoke, known for its extreme stiffness, thus providing greater rigidity. Conversely, the side opposite the freewheel is fitted with a lighter Aerolite® spoke to optimize the weight of the wheel.

DT SWISS PRO LOCK INTERNAL NUTS: The hidden DT (internal nut) is a special feature of our offer. It was developed especially for aero rims, it is very light and is used for internal assembly. Therefore, it is perfectly suited for aero wheels. The spherical bearing area in the rim guarantees perfect orientation with respect to the spoke.
