THE PURPOSE
동급의 steel spoked wheelsets에 비해서 30.16%까지 측면 휨현상 (lateral flex)이 적음으로 하여 1,300gram 미만의 초경량 휠임에도 상당한 수준의 강성 (stiffness) 증가를 시킨 휠셋이다. Hunt 36 UD Carbon Spoke wheelset은 혁신적인 체결방식을 도입하여 접착제 본딩없이 순수하게 기계적인 체결방식으로 carbon spokes를 잡아주는 독자적으로 개발한 TaperLock을 적용하여 일반적인 steel spoke와 동일하게 텐션 조정과 림 정렬이 가능하게 해준다(Carbon spoke tension 조정은 림테이프를 제거한 후 림 내부에 체결된 스포크 헤드를 육각 렌치로 돌려 조정한다). 또한 TaperLock UD Carbon spokes는 450kgf (kilogrms force per spoke)가 넘는 믿을 수 없는 수준의 최대 인장 강도 (maximum tensile strength)를 가져 선도적인 steel spokes들이 300kgf를 가지는 것과 대비된다. 마지막으로 혁신적인 filament wound rims이 적용되어 스트레스가 많은 spoke area를 더욱 강화하고 다른 부분은 감량을 하여 1,295gram이라는 초경량의 신뢰성이 높은 강한 휠셋을 개발하였다.
FEATURES

TaperLock UD Carbon Spoke Technology: 대부분의 현존하는 carbon-spoked wheel들은 접착제 (adhesive bonding) 또는 레진 (resin)을 사용하여 spokes를 부착하는데 이런 방식은 근본적으로 spokes가 rim structure와 일체화되기 때문에 정비성 (serviceability)이 나쁘게 된다. 그러나 Hunt의 TaperLock 체결 방식 (construction method)은 일반 steel spokes와 마찬가지 방식으로 carbon spokes를 기계적인 방식으로 체결할 수 있는 것으로 각 spoke 끝단 둘레에 알루미늄 소재의 체결 부품 (aluminum nipple)을 카본 가열 가공 과정 (curing process)에서 일체화시켜 허브 홀마다 장착되어 타이트하게 당겨서 체결되게 된다. 이 Spoke의 rim 체결 부위는 사각 형태의 나사선 방식의 스틸 체결 부품 (threaded squared steel nipple)이 일체화되어 있으며 rim bed 내부에 고정된 nut에 기본으로 제공되는 spoke key를 사용하여 internal spoke holes를 통해서 체결하게 된다. 이 steel nipple은 표준적인 사각 형태로 (standard square outer shape) 텐션 조정 과정에서도 spoke가 직선 형태로 유지될 수 있게 한다.
Filament Wound Rims with Spoke Area Reinforcement: adaptive filament winding process를 통해 레이업된 rim으로 이 공법은 rim 전반에 걸쳐서 carbon layup 두께와 적용을 달리하게 된다. 이 공법은 spoke로부터 rim의 나머지 부분까지 힘의 전달을 최적화하며 spoke area는 재료를 보강하여 강성을 높이고 spoke와 spoke 사이 rim 부분은 불필요한 중량을 최소화하게 된다. THE PURPOSE
With up to a 30.16% reduction in lateral flex over equivalent steel spoked wheelsets (please click here for full testing methodology and results), the 36 UD Carbon Spoke wheels have been engineered to provide you a significant increase in stiffness as well an impressively low sub 1300g weight. Using an innovative construction method, the 36 UD Carbon Spoke wheelset offers carbon spokes that are held purely mechanically, with no bonding required. We call this TaperLock, and it allows for carbon spokes that can be trued and maintained just like a normal steel spoke.
Plus the TaperLock UD Carbon spokes are incredibly strong achieving over 450kgf (kilograms force per spoke) maximum tensile strength, this compares to leading steel spokes wich only reach 300 kgf. The innovative filament wound rims feature spoke area reinforcement, which creates strength where you need it and saves you vital grams everywhere else.
FEATURES

TaperLock UD Carbon Spoke Technology: Most existing carbon-spoked wheels use adhesive bonding or resin to attach the spokes (essentially making them integral to the structure of the rim - not ideal for serviceability). However, the TaperLock construction method has enabled us to develop wheels with carbon spokes that are as usable as steel ones. At the hub end of the of the spoke an aluminum mandrel is placed around the spoke during the curing process, and is pulled tight against the (tapered) head of the spoke. The rim end of the spoke is fitted in the same way with a threaded steel mandrel, and can be trued using a spoke key on a nut from within the rim bed (accessible through the internal spoke holes). The steel mandrel has a standard square outer shape allowing the spoke to be held straight whilst any adjustments are made to the internal nipple.
Filament Wound Rims with Spoke Area Reinforcement: The rims are laid up by an adaptive filament winding process, which varies the layup thickness and orientation across the rim. The layup pattern places fibres aligned in a series of increasing angles radiating from the spoke hole up to the tire bed. This technology optimises the transmission of force from the spoke to the rest of the rim, and provides additional material to create high strength at the spoke area while minimising unnecessary weight between the spokes. Wide rims with a U-profile provide great handling and reduce drag across multiple wind yaw-angles. Of course, they are also tubeless-ready.
Lateral Stiffness Testing in Detail:

The permanent deflection is negligible for both wheelsets.
CONCLUSION | The HUNT 36 UD Carbon Spoke will deflect 30.16% less laterally compared to the equivalent wheelset with high-specification steel spokes even with 3 less spokes in the wheel.
RIMS: Using an adaptive filament winding process, which varies thickness and orientation across the rim, these rims achieve a very light weight and excellent transmission of force from the spoke to the rest of the rim. The process also provides additional material to create high strength at the spoke areas while minimising unnecessary weight between the spokes. They are wide at 27mm (19mm int.) which creates a great tyre profile, resulting in excellent grip and lower rolling resistance. Toray T700/T800 unidirectional and 3K weave carbon-fibre with 3K weave bed and spoke areas.
RIM SURFACE: High TG resin provides extremely reliable braking and durability for longer descents. We lab test all our rims to very high braking temp (200 C) to push their limits. The high temp resins used for our Griptec Braking surfaces and rims are designed and perform to extremely high levels of braking heat build-up. We also ride test our rim brake wheels in the Alps to ensure the wheels are put through their paces on long, steep and fast descents.
RIM BED: H-Lock is our tubeless-ready rim bed profile with up-kicks to the shoulders of the tubeless steps which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tyres. The H-Lock profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running lower pressures or riding off-road.
HUBS: Carbon spoke optimised TaperLock SPRINT hubs add strength and enhance power transfer meaning all your force pushes you forwards. Large 15mm diameter hub axles for sprinting and out-of-saddle climbing responsiveness. Circular dropout interface steps add extra stiffness.
FREEHUB BODY: Featuring a 3 multi-point pawls with 3 teeth each and a 48 tooth ratchet ring results in an impressively low 7.5 degree engagement angle and excellent resistance to wear under heavy loads. The Sprint freehub has strong individual pawl springs which engage quicker. There is also a Steel Spline Insert re-enforcement to provide excellent durability against cassette sprocket damage often seen on standard alloy freehub bodies.
CARBON SPOKES: Incredibly strong (achieving over 450kgf per spoke) TaperLock UD carbon spokes offering 30% increase in stiffness against steel ones. Only 2.7g per spoke. Due to the TaperLock technology, these spokes can be trued easily using a spoke key from within the rim bed.
